How to set a video as wallpaper on Mac.

Want a moving background instead of a still desktop picture? Here is what macOS provides, what it does not, and how to use a video as a live wallpaper with Asight.

macOS includes dynamic wallpapers and slow-motion screen savers, but it does not provide a general setting for playing any MP4 or MOV continuously behind your desktop. Apple’s own instructions put wallpaper and screen saver choices in System Settings → Wallpaper. For a personal video or a curated moving scene, you need a wallpaper app.

Use Asight for a video wallpaper

  1. Download Asight. Get the current free build from the Asight download section. Asight supports Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later.
  2. Unzip the download. Open the ZIP in Finder. Moving the app to Applications is optional.
  3. Try to open Asight. The current direct download is unsigned, so macOS may show “Asight Not Opened.”
  4. Approve the first launch. Open System Settings, choose Privacy & Security, find the message about Asight, and select Open Anyway. Authenticate if macOS asks, then choose Open Anyway again if prompted.
  5. Choose a scene or import your own video. In Asight’s Library, select a bundled scene and choose Use, or add a personal video. The source video stays local to your Mac.

What “live wallpaper” means on Mac

Apple’s built-in dynamic wallpapers change appearance over time, and screen savers can play slow-motion aerial footage when you are away. Those are different from a continuously playing desktop video. Asight is designed for the latter: moving scenes or personal videos behind the desktop while you work.

If you only want Apple’s built-in options, open System Settings → Wallpaper and choose a wallpaper or screen saver. If you want a video file as the desktop background, continue with Asight.

Can you use any video?

Asight is built for personal video imports alongside its included scene library. Use video that you own or have permission to use. Large or high-resolution files may use more storage and system resources, so shorter loops are a good place to start.
